Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, Stonybrook University, NY

The Simons Center is a new LEED-certified research center that attracts world renown physicists to Stonybrook University. The design team found design inspiration in natural patterns of waves and ripples for the landscape. The topography of the site gave opportunity to create a dynamic entry with a cascading water feature and grand staircase. The building and landscape together worked as one system to achieve LEED Gold certification. For example, the water feature doubles as a cooling system for the building utilities. The design framework was successful in carrying the interior research program outside to the exterior landscape. Our favorite features are the slate chalkboards in the outdoor garden courtyard that serve as impromptu meeting spots for faculty and students.

The seeds of Assemblage’s design approach were planted during this project by designing the building and landscape as a unified system. There is an interdependency of both in the form and ecological performance.
