ATHENS RIVERINE LIVING MUSEUM AND EDUCATION CENTER

Transforming a former industrial site to a new boatbuilding and river exploration hub

Assemblage teamed with urban designer Kaja Kuehl of youarethecity to develop a phased site design for a Living Museum located on the Hudson River. The former industrial warehouse on the site will become a public resource for contemporary and historic boats, education, and ecology. With the support of a Hudson Valley River Greenway grant, we envisioned a new future for a waterfront parcel that will generate local momentum to create a center for maritime and riverine boat education in Athens. The design draws from the existing forest marsh to highlight local ecology and proposes new features to activate new access to the Hudson River.

Location: Village of Athens, New York

A key design strategy is to activate the site by integrating educational initiatives and stewardship opportunities.

The hub enhances Upper Hudson regional water connectivity, supporting small-craft recreation and access.

The design reintroduces native plant communities to heal the land, shoreline, and water, establishing riparian habitat that enhances long-term ecological resilience.

An inviting, working waterfront for boat builders, water recreation enthusiasts, and community members
