A Call to Action for Women Leaders!
This month we’re reflecting on our five-year milestone - and on women-identifying practitioners and leadership within landscape architecture.
Reaching this milestone has led me to reflect on my somewhat unexpected path to leadership. During my past time at New York City landscape architecture firms, I felt called to start a practice, but I wasn’t sure that I was the ‘right’ person to build something from the ground up. Over time, however, my passion for design and environmental stewardship evolved into a mission that prioritizes positive ecological outcomes in the designs I create. Leading a practice founded on this mission has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my life.
Assemblage is proud to be part of a growing community of innovative design firms prioritizing biodiversity, decarbonization, and regenerative design in practice. I approach leadership as an engaged, collaborative process—participating meaningfully in all aspects of our work while creating opportunities for mentorship and growth within our team.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to found and grow Assemblage, and I recognize that I stand on the shoulders of those who came before me - and those that continue to mentor me. Working at women-led firms helped me envision this path. I hope that, in turn, my leadership can help others see what’s possible for themselves.
We need more women-led practices bringing bold ideas, passion, and innovation to the complex challenges we face. If you feel called to lead, don’t wait for permission. Start your practice. Lead your organization, institution, or agency. Step into leadership roles—on boards, in firms, in communities.
Let’s work towards a more biodiverse future and build a legacy of women leaders in the field. Both landscape architecture and the planet need you now more than ever!
